Standing backstage, reading a sheet of paper, OCW’s resident pirate Chris Baxter lets out a hearty scoff and with a smile on his face, places the paper in his back pocket.
Walking onto the set is Stacy Clark and her crew, mic in hand.
Stacy: Excuse me, Chris Baxter?
Baxter: Aye!
Stacy: First, I just want to say congratulations on making it to the 2022 OCW Anniversary Show. Through the 17 year history, you’ve been with the company for almost 15 years now?
Baxter: Was 16 years in January. I have a lot of memories here, some with people that are not remembered fondly of. The Ex Division years ago was my home with people like DJ Chino and Marty Firestone, God rest his soul; Chris Ryder, who I can’t remember if he is dead or not; Aries, and THEN there was my deceitful first mate that left me on an island for a number of years. I had to handle my business where he was first, then I came back to the best place in all of the seven seas, OCW. Now for my future plans…
The sound of sarcastic slow clapping can be heard, which cuts off Baxter while he’s talking.
Entering in the frame is Hyper Mantis Red, who crosses his arms as he reaches the mic.
Hyper Mantis Red: Chuffing brilliant, Chris. Really, quite something. Honestly, any more posturing like that and I'm gonna be sick.
Hyper Mantis Red: Let me tell you something, mate. Do you know why exactly you've been with us for so long? Because you've never had to earn anything. Everything that has gone well in your career was doctored to make you look good, up to and including your latest win. You'll see what real victory looks like at the Anniversary Battle Royal.
Baxter laughs at the insult and fires back.
Baxter: Mantis, I have EARNED everything I ever had, the first title I won was against the great Parker Stevens himself. The fans have backed me every step of the way. I was the ultimate underdog LONG before AC Cobra.
Baxter: And you, it took everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, doubting you and saying you don’t have it for you to show what you truly are, and I must say, you still fall short.
Hyper Mantis Red: They doubted me because they were afraid to face reality. Don't get me wrong, we should always respect our elders, but respect is a two-way street, Baxter. You know that damn well.
???: What do you know about respect?
The camera quickly pans as Hyper Mantis Red and Baxter peer over to see “The Who”, Viktor Karmine, the man who debuted at Ambition #7.
Karmine: Is it the guy who maimed his mentor? The only guy crazy enough to stick his neck out for…
Viktor Karmine examines Mantis up and down.
Karmine: ...you?
Hyper Mantis Red: That doesn't concern you. I did what I had to do. Take solace in the fact I've not done it to you yet. He was just another obstacle in my way, same as Baxter, and same as you. What makes you any different? I don't even know who the hell you are!
Karmine: It’s not just who. It’s THE Who.
Karmine looks over to Baxter and nods his head in respect before walking off the set.
Hyper Mantis Red: Hey, careful you don't get a letter from Pete Townshend, mate! Bloody hell...
Baxter: Mantis, keep talking like that and ye may end up walking the plank. One thing your former protege and I have in common is a love for tables, and holding your tongue may save you from the briny deep.
Hyper Mantis Red wags a gloved finger in Baxter's face.
Hyper Mantis Red: I say what needs to be said, and I do what needs to be done. If I want a lecture on anthropology from you, I'll ask for it. At the Anniversary Show, my actions will truly speak louder than words.
With that, Hyper Mantis Red walks off in the opposite direction.
Baxter: *whispering to Stacy*
I think he might be overcompensating for something...
Baxter: But the more things change the more things stay the same. Always a flux of new people to sail this ocean called OCW with plenty of treasures and gold to win. Stacy, it’s been fun.
Baxter raises his hand to the sky. A rope suddenly appears from the ceiling as Baxter swings away off screen, leaving a bemused Stacy Clark on her own backstage.
